It was the fiftieth birthday of my dear dear Ava and I wanted to make her something special. At first I wanted to make a top down T. Then I saw the
Baccarat Top knitted by Allison that is now hanging in Circles. It is beautiful and flattering and sexy. And also sort of orange, which is a favorite color of Ava’s. I purchased the Blue Heron Rayon in Deep copper, but then I decided to use tne Southwest Bamboo in the Tequila Sunrise colorway that I had in my stash. Ava loves bamboo, I think to my self and she will love the idea of wearing it. True enough.
Stash busting is good. True enough.
But the unspoken reason is : I wanted that beautiful deep copper rayon for myself.
So I started and finished the back of Baccarat with the first ball of Bamboo, no problem.
I am crusin’. This is one present that will be on time. I started the front using the second ball. I am making fine progress.
Of course having made alterations to the patterns keeping in mind my friends shape and not having my notes handy, I hold the front to the back and OMIGOD……
They don’t match.
Not even a little.
I am horrified, such a rookie mistake. I had purchased all 3 balls at once not thinking about the dye lot.
This is what I get for being selfish. (Cause it’s not the first time that I kept a beautiful yarn for my self that was originally intended for a gift)
The Knitting goddess got me, but good.
I am now swatching the Blue Heron for the Baccart top. For my friend Ava’s belated birthday present. Deadline July 2, 2006.
Wish me luck.

It seems like everyone is having "D'oh!" knitting moments these days. Must be the heat.
Dude, that totally sucks. :(
Oh honey, that's such a shame.
I am so sorry that you had dyelot problems, that tank would be lovely in the bamboo. In fact, I may need to get some bamboo at Circles this weekend and start one for myself...
if you haven't ripped, I can check if we have the dyelot at my LYS for you! (um, we met a few months ago, in Feb, I think. Wendy brought me in while I was visiting/interviewing at BC. It took me this long to find your blog.)
